Nise, la tragedia de Inés de Castro
(Nise, the tragedy of Inés de Castro) is a Renaissance tragedy that
questions the exercise of power and offers us the timely opportunity to
investigate the political connections with our contemporariness. Based on
Jerónimo Bermúdez's Nise lastimosa y Nise laureada (Nise piteous
and Nise triumphant), director Ana Zamora builds a unified dramaturgy that
allows the viewer to delve into this vision of bad government, through one
of the best known stories of the Spanish-Portuguese tradition, the legend
of Inés de Castro, lover of Infante Don Pedro of Portugal, murdered for the
sake of common good politics and crowned, after her death, as queen of the
Lusitanian country. In the work, the love and death of beautiful Inés serve
as a specific example to question the palatial intrigues and disrespectful
attitudes of rulers dragged by court life. This new show by Nao d'amores
keeps the distinctive hallmark of the company, in which music, directed by
Alicia Lázaro, plays an important role.
Strong political pressure led King Alonso of Portugal - the historic King
Don Affonso - to decree the execution of Inês de Castro, who secretly
married her son, Infante Don Pedro. Three courtiers carried out the legal
assassination. Don Pedro, on hearing the news, ended up temporarily losing
his mind, and once recovered, he declared war on his father. The assassins
fled to Castile. Once King Alonso died, Don Pedro ascended the throne of
Portugal. After being proclaimed king in Coimbra, he dug up Inês's body,
married her publicly and pu the royal crown on her. The extradition of the
former assassins, turned in by the King of Castile to his Portuguese
counterpart, means that two people directly responsible for Inés’ death are
executed before the viewer’s eyes.
